The scope of this project was the realisation of a metaphorical installation inspired by Ettore Sottsass‘s work on Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands. The balcony was chosen as architectural archetype serving as threshold space between interior and exterior, and this condition was applied to the island’s territory, at the border between earth and ocean.

The design and planning process took part over the semester in Milan, to prepare for an intensive week on site to build, document, and finally dismantle the installation. Three sheets of MDF painted black attached together with zip-ties and anchored in the sand by rebar as well as an upholstered balustrade composed the final design. Communicating the project on social media was also an important part of the process and it can be found on Instagram here.
