PROJECT TREEHOUSE

PROJECT TREEHOUSE

PLACE: BARCELONA, SPAIN
YEAR: 2014
TYPE: WORKSHOP
PROF: PROF. DIETER DIETZ, ALICE, ÉCOLE POLITECNIQUE FÉDÉRALE DE LAUSANNE
TEAM: 15 EPFL STUDENTS INCLUDING ARMIN ASCHENBRENNER

This workshop was organised in Barcelona by the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in conjunction with the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC). It focused on digital prototyping applied to a natural environment and was thus dubbed the Treehouse Project.

Over the course of three weeks, students experimented with different digital fabrication techniques such as lasercutting and CNC milling to finally produce this construct. To design this tunnel like structure, Rhinoceros 3D and the Grasshopper plugin were used to create a parametric model which indicated if the shape was constructible based on bending test data gathered on site, as well as to give precise indications for the fabrication of the laminated parts and placement of the weaving.
